Glenwood Yoga students raise money for Durban’s homeless

As a yoga instructor, Duncan Rice has been inspired by the principles of hatha yoga to look after those less fortunate.

GLENWOOD yoga instructor, Duncan Rice, and his students recently raised more than R1200 for the Denis Hurley Centre which is working to assist Durban’s homeless.

Rice, who is the principal teacher of Yogam Yoga, said his students took part in the 108 Sun Salutation Challenge on a donation basis to raise money for those in need.

“I am overwhelmed by the generosity of this yoga group in making a better life for the homeless of Durban. Thank you to the Denis Hurley Centre for all they do in our city,” said Rice.

DHC director, Raymond Perrier said Rice is one of the volunteers at the centre.

“With the Covid-19 pandemic, we haven’t been able to organise fundraisers as we usually would. It was great that Yogam Yoga could step in and arrange this fundraiser,” he said.

After six weeks of practice, more than 15 students took part in the challenge on Saturday, January, 29 at the University of KwaZulu Natal’s Jubilee Hall.

Glenwood resident, Renisha Naidoo was among those who took part.

“Yogam Yoga is where yoga started for me. When I joined the class, I was so unfit,” she said.

Naidoo recalls how she would collapse on her yoga mat when attempting some poses as a beginner.

“The 108 challenge is a huge achievement for me. I am so pleased that we have been able to help those most vulnerable in our city at the same time,” she said.

In his charitable work, Rice has been inspired by the principles of hatha yoga, which he studied in India.

“One of the main principles of this ancient practice is to look after those less fortunate than yourself,” said Rice.

Rice also offered free online yoga classes during the Covid-19 lockdown period, later using physical spaces in both Glenwood, Musgrave and Chatsworth.
