Durban residents in the dark as they struggle to buy electricity

The eThekwini Municipality said it cannot confirm when this service will be restored.

RESIDENTS are up in arms as they are forced to live without electricity due to an outage in the prepaid metre service.

The eThekwini Municipality announced the interruption of services yesterday, (Thursday, February 3), and said it was due to multiple fibre breaks in Umhlanga and New Germany.

A Durban resident, Slindelokuhle Ngubane said, “I tried every store yesterday, to purchase electricity with no luck, I even tried buying on the phone banking app,” she said.

Ngubane said this was so frustrating as she has small children.

“The bigger ones had to go to people’s houses to get warm water to bath this morning, it is so frustrating,” she said.

According to the City, the estimated time for restoration of service cannot be confirmed.

“The city has dispatched a team of technicians who are currently working on the Umhlanga and Pinetown connection points to restore service,” reported the City.

The City apologised for any inconvenience caused.

In the meantime, customers are advised to make their electricity purchases directly from the following Municipality’s customer service centres:

●Rotunda Customer Services.
●Pinetown Customer Services.
●Florence Mkhize Building.
●Isipingo Customer Services.
●Kingsburgh Sizakala Centre.
