Umbilo watch cares: new wheelchair for Valerie

The wheelchair was donated by Umbilo Warriors Community Watch (UWCW) and handed over by Port Natal Sharp Shooters.

VALRIE Wheldonhughes (83) was the recipient of a refurbished wheelchair on Saturday, January 29.

The wheelchair was donated by Umbilo Warriors Community Watch (UWCW) and handed over by Port Natal Sharp Shooters.

UWCW chairperson, Craig Walker, said Daniel Neethling, Deputy old bull of Port Natal Sharp Shooters, reached out to UWCW.

“One of our members kindly refurbished the wheelchair at his own cost and brought it for us to present to the Moth Cottages. They of course accepted it with open arms. UWCW is not just about patrolling and crime prevention, but also about helping where we can and building a happier, safer community for all that live in Umbilo,” he said.

Walker said UWCW have also assisted community members with various tasks including changing flat tyres in the middle of the night, finding lost children and cleaning up local parks.

“We believe that a community that works together grows together,” he said.

The wheelchair will give Wheldonhughes, a Port Natal Settlers resident, more mobility to move around at home

“I’ve lost my balance. I’ve been like this for about seven years. I have a walker but that doesn’t work anymore,” she said.

“With the wheelchair, she can get around. the house. She can’t go out unless someone fetches her to take her out,” added Neetthling.

He said the wheelchair hand over took place at their monthly meeting held at the Rhumbelow Theatre hall.

“A MOTH is a man in good standing. We are war veterans. We have a collection box and if any of our members need medication, for example, we will talk money out of the welfare box. Most of our members are pensioners,” he said.

UWCW members attended the hand-over ceremony to raise awareness about their work. In the process, UWCW found a new member in welfare officer from Port Natal Sharp Shooters, Bobby Balcomb. He joined his first night patrol with UWCEW on Monday, February 1.
