WATCH: Glenwood schools celebrate matric results

Learners celebrated their results after a tough year that was riddled with Covid-19 challenges.

DEESPITE the challenges brought about by Covid-19, learners from the class of 2021 took the matric exams in their stride and many revisited their schools today to collect their results.

The Berea Mail visited Glenwood High School and Holy Family College to catch up with our local matriculants.

The top achiever at Glenwood High School, Anshul Harilall passed with seven distinctions.

“We  were back at school for the entire matric year, but, of course, there was a knock-on effect as the pandemic carried through from 2020. Our curriculum was severely effected in Grade 11, so there were large knowledge gaps we had to fill in during our matric year to complete the syllabus,” said Harilall.

Mikhail Mahomed Bassa also graduated with seven distinctions from Glenwood High School.

“I graduated with an average aggregate of 94%. Some of my top marks were 98.5% for accounting, 97% for physics and 96% mathematics,” said the matriculant, who will study medicine at the University of Pretoria.

When asked what advice he would share with the class of 2022, Mahomeed Bassa said, ” I think the most important thing is to maintain  a balance and try your best to enjoy the year.”

Glenwood High School’s principal, Andri Barnes said there was a 98.5% pass rate at the school.

“It was a very challenging year. The academic  programme was interrupted. Many learners contracted Covid-19 and then they would be absent for 10 days, which affected them. The educators were so motivated and committed as they supported the learners through it,” she said.

Holy Family College

The Holy Family Collage matriculants celebrated a 100% pass rate at their school.

The school’s principal, Ursula Collings, said there were 27 matric learners in the class of 2021.

“This has been a milestone achievement for us. Not only for today, but from the time our children enter the school, from Grade R or Grade 8 up to matric. The achievement has been profound because of the resilience and  perseverance our children have shown,” she said.

Grace Kisonga, who was Holy Family College’s 2021 head girl, graduated with distinctions for history, French and maths literacy.

“As head girl, there were challenges in learning to take responsibility and take up that leadership role. I learnt a lot.  The exams were good, overall, except for the accounting exam- I’ve never been more scared in my life,” laughed the matriculant.

Aphelele Mbambo, the deputy had girl for 2021, shared some advice for this year’s matric class.

“Start studying from the very beginning of the year, because it gets tough at the end of the year. Read a lot of books and practice, practice, practice,” she said.
