Berea Bowling Club – 100 years and counting

The club has brought berea bowlers together since 1913.

THE Berea Bowling Club (BBC) was established in 1913, more than a century ago, and it was proud to host its centenary competition in 2013 to mark 100 years on the greens.

The president of the club, Jimmy Lee, was elected at the club’s AGM on November 20 last year.

“I joined as a social member in 2015 and became a bowling member in 2019. I often played in the club’s fun events and was encouraged by other bowlers to take the sport up on a more serious basis,” said Lee.

Heeding this call, Lee went on to win the 2021 novice pairs at the club, which he played with with Shaun Pearce.

With several events hosted on a weekly basis, the Berea Bowling Club currently has 65 bowling members and 55 registered social members.

“We host Tabs on Tuesdays and Saturdays as well as The Chicken Run every Wednesday. This competition has been running for more than 40 years,” said Lee.

In addition to this, the Berea Bowling Club hosts the The SPAR Competition on the last Thursday of every month and drawn trips on the last Sunday of every month. What’s more, the club caters to the visually impaired.

“We are proud to host the blind bowlers every Sunday afternoon, when some of our dedicated club bowlers provide help and guidance,” said Lee.

Lee said the club’s membership fees help to cover the running costs of the club.

“We also rely on social events, such as live music on Fridays, the hiring of the hall for functions and we hire out the greens for fun days to help contribute to the running costs of the club,” he said.
