From uMhlanga to the Bluff – here’s where it’s safe to swim
A new transformer has been installed at Johana Road pump station to address the sewage leaks.
SEVERAL Durban beaches have been opened to the public after tests showed a decrease in E. coli levels. The eThekwini Municipality made the announcement on Tuesday, January 11.
This follows several beach closures in recent weeks that have been linked to ongoing sewage spills.

While some beaches remain closed for bathing and sporting activities, the City confirmed that these beaches are free of bacteria and open to the public:
North coast
Umhlanga Main Beach, Bronze Beach, Westbrook Beach and Umdloti Beach.
Central Beaches
Point Beach, Ushaka Beach, Addington Beach, South Beach and Wedge Beach.
South coast
Brighton Beach and Ansteys Beach in the Bluff as Reunion Park Beach, Pipeline Beach, Amanzimtoti Main Beach, Warner Beach, Winkle Beach and Umgababa Beach.
The City is working to address the ongoing sewage leak.
“Work to install a new transformer at the Johana Road sewage pump station has commenced and is at an advanced stage. The pump is expected to start operating in full swing before the end of this week,” said the City.

Further tests will be done to monitor water quality.
“The closure of beaches is a precautionary measure by the city to guard against members of the public bearing the brunt of contaminated water by falling ill,” said the City.
