eThekwini closes several beaches following high levels of E. coli

The City said the closure of the beaches is in the interest of public safety.

THE eThekwini Municipality has made yet another about turn and has closed seven Durban beaches with immediate effect.

This is due to the unacceptable levels of E. coli readings on the affected beaches, said city’s spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela.

Mayisela said South Beach, North Beach, Bay of Plenty Beach, Sun Coast Beach, Country Club Beach and Umgeni Beach are now closed.

“The levels of this bacteria have been compounded by the unceasing vandalism of one of the city’s sewage pump station and abnormal heavy rains that are washing waste from multitudes of informal settlements along the Umgeni River,” he said.
