Berea SAPS warns residents to be vigilant at ATMs

Berea SAPS said people should not accept help from strangers at ATMs.

WITH the festive season in full swing, Berea SAPS has shared important safety when using ATM’s at shopping malls.

The spokesperson for the Berea SAPS, Captain Poobalan Naidoo said this period statistically saw a spike in crime-related incidents in and around ATMs. He urged the public to avoid withdrawing large sums of cash.

“When withdrawing cash from an ATM, use your body as a cover to prevent any person from seeing you entering your pin code. When money is received from the cash dispenser, immediately place it inside your wallet or handbag before leaving the banking hall,” he said.

Naidoo said it is important to be vigilant at all times.

“If you suspect that you are being followed after withdrawing cash from an ATM hall or bank, report the person to mall security,” he said.

He added that if you suspect that you are being followed after exiting a bank, enter another shop and ask for assistance. If a security officer is nearby, move in his/her direction and ask for help.
