Illegal immigrant arrested, appears in court

The man is also believed to have been in possession of stolen property.

AN illegal immigrant (28) made his first appearance at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, November 9 after he was nabbed by police and found to be in possession of stolen property.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, the man, whose name is known to the Berea Mail, was arrested on November 7 at 15:00.

“Durban Central police were conducting patrol duties in the Durban CBD when they received information of a man dealing in stolen cellphones in Queen Street and proceeded to the said place,” she said.

Mbele said the man was spotted by police. He was searched was found to be in possession of an iPad and various cellphones. 

The man failed to provide proof of ownership of the goods and attempted to bribe the police officials.

“It was discovered that he didn’t have the necessary documents to be in this country and was charged for contravening the Immigration Act, being in possession of suspected stolen property and bribery,” said Mbele.
