R300m cruise terminal nears completion

According to the MSC Cruises SA, the Covid-19 pandemic may have delayed the project but it is currently in its final stage of completion.

DURBAN’S newest R300m multi-use cruise terminal is set to be up and running by 2022.

Speaking to the Berea Mail, Ross Volk, Managing Director of MSC Cruises South Africa said the Covid-19 pandemic may have delayed the project but it is currently in its final stage of completion.

“We plan to open the facility for cruise vessels at the start of the 2021/2022 cruise season, when confirmed by the various cruise lines,” said Volk.

He noted the length of quay available will be 340m, while the building itself is 5 000m².

The passenger terminal could accommodate about 4 000 passengers.

Volk said the new terminal was envisaged as a project that will boost tourism numbers by making Durban a more desirable destination for cruise ships from around the globe.
