Voter’s rights highlighted ahead of World Homeless Day

World Homeless Day is an international movement, that aims to draw attention to issues that affect the homeless.

THE Durban-based organisation, the Denis Hurley Centre (DHC) will host a Covid-19 vaccination drive for the homeless on World Homeless Day, Sunday October 10.

This forms part of the National Homeless Manifesto, a countrywide project of the National Homeless Network that comprises of more than 40 organisations from 15 towns and cities across the country.

The DHC asked all of the parties and candidates in the eThekwini Municipal elections to sign up to the National Homeless Manifesto.

The manifesto guarantees specific policies for homeless people in Durban so they can access shelter, sanitation, security, healthcare and jobs.

The director of DHC, Raymond Perrier said, “Policies that are good for the homeless are also usually good for the wider citizenry of Durban. That is why this weekend we are working with City Health to make sure that homeless people are vaccinated against Covid-19. The constitution guarantees rights for all, and we want to make sure that the new city council understands that.”

As part of the manifesto, political parties and individual candidates will be challenged to ensure that the needs of the homeless are on the political agenda in the run up to the municipal elections.
