Three arrested in Umbilo for robbery

The suspects will be profiled to check if they are linked to other robberies reported in Durban and surrounding areas.

THREE suspects, aged between 20 and 28, were arrested in Umbilo when they were caught with house breaking implements in their vehicle. They are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today, August 25.

Provincial spokesperson for the SAPS, Captain Nqobile Gwala said Umbilo police officers received information about a vehicle with an obscured number plate that been involved in the robbery.

“It is alleged that the suspects threatened a security guard and robbed him of a remote control at a business premises in Berea. The Umbilo Task Team spotted the vehicle with obscured registration plates travelling on Kerk Road in the Umbilo policing precinct. The vehicle was intercepted and a search was conducted. Upon searching the vehicle, police found house breaking implements such as a bolt cutter, crow bars and other items. Police also seized the remote control that was taken from the business robbery in Berea. Two pairs of sunglasses that were allegedly stolen from a business burglary at a Glenwood mall were also found in the suspect’s vehicle,” said Gwala.

It is alleged that the suspects broke into an optometrist surgery in at 06:00 on August 20 and stole a number of sunglasses.

“The same group of suspects then proceeded to another business premises in Mayville where they broke in and stole cigarettes,” said Gwala.

She added that the suspects will be profiled to check if they are linked to other robberies reported in Durban and surrounding areas.
