"To see some of these business owners is devastating, some of them are in tears- this is their bread and butter." - volunteer.

SCORCHED structures, smashed glass, and empty shelves are among the debris in Springfield business park after rampant looting continued for days this week. Business owners were hard at work to restore their stores on Friday, July 16. Community members pitched in to lend a hand and clean up the area.

Sadeem Hassim and Yastri Naidoo were among the volunteers working to clear debris on Umgeni Road.

“We just saw the destruction and how unnecessary it was. Why cause such destruction? That’s what I found to be unnecessary,” said Hassim.

Community members also pitched in to help clean up at the Springfield Retail Centre.

Speaking to the Berea Mail volunteer, Karishma Khemraz said: “We have come down to assist our community. Looking at  all the businesses that are destroyed, it is hurtful. Our goal is to help rebuild South Africa again, because it’s our future. We are building a future for our children as well, not just ourselves. To see some of these business owners is devastating, some of them are in tears- this is their bread and butter,” she said.
