THE South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) will celebrate Africa Day on 25 May at the Durban Beachfront Promenade, Bay of Plenty Lawns, from 9am to 2pm.

Africa Day is an annual event which calls on residents to stand in solidarity with people facing environmental injustice, xenophobia and gender inequality.

Joanne Groom from SDCEA said, “We need unity in South Africa among all nations, creeds and colours and we need to show solidarity to the rest of Africa. For many decades women have taken a back seat when decisions have been made for the community and for them. These decisions have not benefited or empowered women; rather it has made women bear the absolute brunt of climate change and a lack of service delivery,” he said.

Groom said there needs to be a shift in power, women need to take on more leadership and decision making roles and demand gender equity.

SDCEA will be portraying all these themes through dramatic arts, dances and songs at the event.

To participate in the event, contact Sherelee Odayar on 031 468 1257 or email sherelee@sdceango.co.za.
