Church leaders stand in solidarity with foreign nationals

During the march, the leaders expressed their concerns for foreign nationals who were targeted in recent months.

KZN church leaders united in a silent march earlier today, in Durban, to show solidarity with those affected by the recent xenophobic attacks.

The leaders expressed their concerns for foreign nationals who were targeted in recent months.

Bishop Nkosinathi Myaka of the The KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council (KZNCC), confirmed they have received a number of reports of loss of incomes and an increase in physical violence.

“As Christians, we believe that Our Lord is a God of neighbour-love, hospitality, and inclusivity. Therefore it is at such a time where as leaders we show our commitment to this cause of peace between South Africans and foreign nationals,” said Bishop Myaka.

“I want to challenge South Africa to stand in solidarity with the KZN government and by having a gathering like this in the provinces can raise this consciousness.  We are all made in God’s Image. We thank you for who you are and the richness that you bring,” said Bishop Paul Verryn.

Speaking on behalf of the foreigners, Beatrice Pierre, from Democratic Republic of Congo, said the xenophobic attacks are painful.

“They always tell us we must go back to our country. Our country is good, but the problem with our country is the fighting. I was working by the Workshop doing nails but they took everything from me, and they will fight me. I tried moving somewhere else, selling avocados, but the police took everything that I had as well,” said Pierre.

Following the march, the church leaders will continue praying for peace, justice and reconciliation. They will speak to refugee leaders and call on the South African government to take action during their three-part process to address the xenophobic attacks.
