Continue to donate to families left destitute after Musgrave fire

Following the fire, which broke out in one of the flats at Povall Court, at the intersection of Povall and Musgrave Roads, an appeal has been made for the community to assist with donations for the families.

AN appeal goes out to the community to continue donating items for the families affected by the devastating fire that tore through a block of flats in Musgrave in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Following the fire, which broke out in one of the flats at Povall Court, at the intersection of Povall and Musgrave Roads, an appeal has been made for the community to assist with donations for the families.

Members of the eThekwini Secure team alongside EThekwini Dynamic, Strategic Group Security, Stealth Guarding Division and Community First 4 U were alerted of the fire through the community assistance Zello channel at midnight on 17 January, and when the team arrived they found that one apartment was already well alight.

Controllers immediately contacted the eThekwini Fire Department.

On-site, a Facebook Live video by Musher Khan from eThekwini Secure went viral where Khan spent more than an hour filming the blaze, which quickly spread to the entire top floor of the block.

The blaze was extinguished at around 3.30am, however the top floor was gutted, and the roof collapsed.

While no cause of the fire could be determined at the time, rumours were rife that load shedding was the culprit.

Two other fires in the Brickfield Road area of Overport and a substation in Springfield were affected by load shedding.

Commenting on the incident, eThekwini Secure’s chairperson Imtiaz Syed commended the first responders who so dedicatedly carried out their duty.

“We at eThekwini Secure thank everyone who helped and for your exceptional efforts. Keep up your fantastic selfless work. You are a credit to and a strong support base for your community that you so well serve.”

Councillor Charmaine Clayton stands on the second floor of the building.

He said it must be noted that there are people in the community who never hesitate to help.

There was an overwhelming response to appeals for donations of groceries and clothing and in the aftermath of the fire the families were accommodated at a guest house in the area without hesitation.

Ward councillor Charmaine Clayton encouraged donations of toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and other toiletries, sanitisers, clothes, shoes, and furniture, as the residents were left only with what they were wearing when they evacuated their homes.

These items can be dropped at her office at 4 South Road, Overport. Contact 082 344 1722.
