A MAN was arrested by police after he was seen breaking into a moving vehicle in Durban Central on 17 November.
According to police spokesperson, Col Thembeka Mbele, on Tuesday afternoon members of the Durban Central Field Unit conducted operations to trace a group that is involved in a spate of crimes relating to delivery vehicles being broken into while parked and offloading cargo or while in transit in the Julius Nyere precinct.
“While conducting patrols in an unmarked vehicle in the Warwick Triangle, the police officers observed a man breaking into the rear of a bread delivery truck while it was still in motion. They immediately responded and apprehended the suspect who was taken to Durban Central police station,” she said.

The suspect, (18), was charged for theft out of motor vehicle and is expected to appear in Durban Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (19 November) facing the same charges. “The suspect will be further profiled to ascertain as to whether he is involved in other similar crimes committed in the CBD. The quick response and observation by the police officers resulted in the second consecutive breakthrough of theft out of delivery vehicles committed in the CBD,” she said.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Khombinkosi Jula commended the police officers for being observant and for arresting the suspect before the crime could be committed.
