Umbilo police have made numerous arrests this week.

UMBILO police have carried out a number of arrests this past week.

Man arrested for dagga possession

A 36-year-old man man was arrested for being in possession of dagga on Sunday evening, 17 November.

Accodring to Sergeant Beverly Manqele, Communications Officer at Umbilo SAPS, while Warrant Officer M Mbele was patrolling along Sydney Road in a marked police vehicle with a crew student Constable N E Mkhize officer, he noticed the suspect walking suspiciously along the road carrying a black backpack “The officer stopped and searched the suspect and found three parcels of dagga inside the backpack wrapped in a newspaper,” she said.

Soap thief arrested

A man was arrested for theft of a dozen soap bars on Monday, 18 November.

Sgt Manqele said Student Constable M Mkhize and crew were patrolling along Dalton Road next to Dalton men’s hostel when they saw a suspicious man carrying a bag. They stopped and searched him. “They found nothing on him but on searching his bag, they found twelve 200 grams of bath soap. When asked to account with the receipt or explanation he chose to remain silent,” Manqele said.

The suspect was arrested under Section 36, possession of property suspected to be stolen and detained at the police station.

Murder suspect arrested

A 21-year-old man was arrested on Sunday, 16 November for a the murder of a 26-year-old man who was stabbed to death at Flamingo Court.

According to Sgt Beverly Manqele, Constable N M Luthuli from SAPS Umbilo visible policing arrested the suspect at Flamingo Court. “The victim’s brother alleges there was an argument between the suspect and the deceased. He said the deceased left his flat and the suspect followed him. The deceased man came to his brother a few minutes later and told him the suspect had stabbed him and fell on the floor,” said Manqele.

The suspect fled the scene. Paramedics certified the victim, who was stabbed in the chest, dead at the scene.

The suspect was arrested and detained at Mayville SAPS for further investigation. The suspect is expected to appear in Durban Magistrate Court this week.

Man arrested for domestic assault

A 36-year-old man was arrested on Saturday, 16 November after assaulting his girlfriend in a domestic dispute.

“The woman reported that she had asked him for R230 which he owed her. An argument ensued and the boyfriend pushed her against the wall and assaulted her. The woman collapsed and the man kicked her while she lay on the floor. The woman screamed for help, we received the complaint and responded immediately,” said Sgt Beverly Manqele of Umbilo SAPS.

The suspect was charged and detained at the police station. The case is under investigation by Umbilo detective branch.
