Theft out of cars: Motorists urged to be vigilant at traffic lights

Items such as laptops, cellphones, bags and wallets are targeted.

DURBAN Central SAPS appeals to motorists to be vigilant when approaching traffic lights. 

This following an increase in the number of theft out of motor vehicle cases in Durban.

Const Zanele Khomo from Durban Central said: “It has come to the attention of SAPS Durban Central that cases such as theft out of motor vehicle are increasing. Motorists keep their windows wide open when stationary at the traffic light, exposing valuable items. Motorists are urged to properly close their windows and lock doors when they are approaching traffic lights or when stationary,” she said.

Khomo said suspects are targeting motorists when windows are open and they use that chance to grab items that are inside the motor vehicles.

“It has been identified that items such as laptops, cellphones, bags and wallets are targeted.”

The community or motorists can contact police if they witness such incidents or suspicious-looking people at intersections on the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
