Suspect nabbed following shootout with Berea police

Berea police officers were conducting patrols along Currie Road in Essenwood when they received information about a house robbery in progress.

A HOUSE robber was arrested following a shootout with Berea police on Friday, 18 September.

According to Capt Nqobile Gwala, provincial SAPS spokesperson, at midday, Berea police officers were conducting patrols along Currie Road in Essenwood when they received information about a house robbery in progress.

“When the police arrived at the scene, they noticed a vehicle parked at the entrance of the property. The suspects immediately opened fire and there was a shootout. Some of the suspects fled the scene in a getaway vehicle while another jumped over the wall. The suspect was placed under arrest in a neighbour’s yard. He was found in possession of a laptop,” sais Gwala.

She said the other two suspects fled the scene with a TV and other belongings.

It is alleged three armed suspects held up the occupants in the house and stole the TV and laptops. A police vehicle was damaged during the shootout.

The suspect will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court this week on robbery charges.

Acting KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Maj Gen Thulani Gonya, commended the police officers for swiftly arresting the house robber.
