Bulwer eyesore turned into arts centre

The Iqraa Trust spent in excess of R1.5 million turning a dilapidated building into a community arts and culture centre.

A LOCAL organisation has turned a once dilapidated building into a multi-purpose arts centre. The Iqraa Trust is a non-profit organisation that aims to uplift the lives of impoverished people through donating to humanitarian causes.

The organisation’s offices are based in Bulwer opposite what used to be a derelict building that was an eyesore for the community.

The building before.

Dr Youssef Baker, chairman of Iqraa Trust, said they renovated the space for about R1.5 million.

“We intend to use it for community programmes, projects, e-learning seminars, computer centres, for workshops and graduations. For schools if they want to hold any programmes for the learners,” he said. “We also have an arts and culture department where we have a guitar and keyboard for music.”

The money made from the arts centre will be redistributed into other worthy causes. Baker said the money for the trust is generated through their investments in property, banks and other businesses.

This month, Baker said they will be hosting seminars for learners to be taught in maths, physics and accounting. The learners will also have a talk from an experienced motivational speaker.

The Iqraa Trust has helped a number of organisations across the country and for more information on how to access assistance, visit: https://www.iqraatrust.org/
