2.4 metre black mamba rescued on Durban beach

Snake rescuers were pleasantly surprised when they found the black mamba at Addington Beach.

A 2.47 metre black mamba was rescued on Addington Beach, on Tuesday.

The mamba was found by Metro Search and Rescue who then contacted the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) to help rescue it.

“The snake was so exhausted that when we approached her she hardly even noticed us. She was so easy to handle and thankfully remained calm while we transported her back to Ushaka Sea World where our resident veterinarian, Dr Francois Lampen was standing by to assess her condition,” said Craig Smith, one of the two herpetologists who responded to the call.

“Black mambas are uncommonly found along the coastal belt as they prefer deep valley areas with thick vegetation. They are commonly found in areas such as Reservoir Hills, Westville and Krantzkloof, to name a few. This particular snake had possibly come down through the canals and rivers that run into the harbour,” said SAAMBR.

SAAMBR said there had been another large snake spotted recently on the Durban south pier.

The mamba will remain in the care of uShaka Sea World staff until she regains her strength and is declared fit for reintroduction into a suitable habitat.
