Suspect found with Xanax stash appears in court

Police discovered 54 medicine containers of Xanax in a man's vehicle during an intelligence driven operation.

A 20-YEAR-OLD man made his first appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday for contravention of the Medicines Control Act 101 of 1965.

According to Colonel Thembeka Mbele, provincial SAPS spokesperson, on 22 July at 1.30pm, detectives from the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit conducted an intelligence driven operation.

“Following a rigorous investigation, they stopped a vehicle in the area and conducted a search. Police discovered 54 medicine containers labelled as Mylan Alprazolam (Xanax) covered by a big jacket. The driver failed to produce necessary documents for the drugs when he was questioned. He was immediately arrested and detained at the Umbilo police station,” said Mbele.

Provincial Commissioner in KwaZulu-Natal, Lt Gen Khombinkosi Jula, commended detectives from the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit for the arrest.
