Cover up for the classroom

Fifteen hundred learners at two primary schools received masks sponsored by Discovery Health SA on behalf of the Chad Le Clos Foundation.

“TO mask or not to mask?” is not even a question as schoolchildren emerge from lockdown and start lessons again.

Fifteen hundred learners at two primary schools which partner with The Domino Foundation’s Literacy and Life Skills programmes, received masks custom designed and made by Uzwelo Bags and sponsored by Discovery Health SA on behalf of their South African Olympic Swimming ambassador Chad Le Clos for his namesake foundation.

The Chad le Clos Foundation was established with the goal of developing swimming among children from backgrounds where access to pools and training are limited or absent.

“With June being Youth Month in South Africa, commemorating the young people of 1976 who stood for freedom and the right to equal education, Discovery’s generosity will help ensure the protection of schoolchildren who are able to resume their education which has been on hold for three months,” said Leigh-Ann Stevens, leader of both the Domino programmes.

The masks in their five design variations are no ordinary personal protective equipment: each of the 100 per cent local items with its antimicrobial and water-repellent finish have a filter included and is sustainable in that it can be washed and reused.

The donation of the masks came at just the right time as the youth workers with Domino’s Life Skills and Literacy programmes had completed their roles in helping sanitise the two schools.

Stevens, speaking of the coming together of the two NPOs and the insurance giant, noted: “Our combined efforts are helping ensure that the learners are as safe as they can possibly be in their school environment to restart their education with confidence.”
