It’s a win for Durban’s talented Alex

Alex van Schalkwyk won the senior vocal category in an online talent competition.

TALENTED Eden College matric learner, Alex van Schalkwyk won the senior vocal category in the online talent competition, Starz at Home.

The competition was open to school learners, with categories for dance, acting and singing and with senior and junior sections.

Entrants were required to send through a 90-second clip of any one of those performances or more and await the results, with fan favourite, overall and category prizes up for grabs.

Alex, who has been singing and playing guitar for almost seven years, was selected as the winner of the senior vocal category.

“Winning for me was a hilarious surprise considering I had forgotten on the day to watch the live announcement, and finally looked at my phone four hours later to see messages of congratulations. I was super excited and elated to see all the congrats and screenshots of the announcement declaring me the winner, it was pretty much the epitome of an unexpected pleasant surprise!” he said.

Alex has performed multiple times on both The Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre and Playhouse Opera stages, in plays like The Sound of Music and Footloose, which was part of the annual Young Performers Project.

“I’ve written many of my own originals and with music as an integral part of my life, I don’t see myself doing much else. Singing and making music is my foreseeable future after I finish my matric,” he said.
