Fresh start for flower sellers

Stellawood Cemetery MOTH flower sellers have resumed selling from the premises after lockdown regulations were moved to level 3.

MOTH Flora, a fundraising initiative which has been in operation at Stellawood Cemetery selling flowers since 1965, has a new name, new committee and a new start following the end of lockdown level four.

Shay Lester, chair of the group, now called Cottage Flowers, said they were able to start selling flowers again at the cemetery.

“With lockdown, we missed two of the biggest fundraisers for the year, Mother’s Day and Easter, and we encourage people to support us for Father’s Day on 21 June and make this a success for us,” she said.

There will also be a cake sale on the day, and a raffle of a donated bottle of brandy.

Louisa Hitchcock from Cottage Flowers said the name change had come at the request of the MOTH organisation.

“None of the original founder shellholes are involved with the project anymore, so it was decided that it was time for a change. We have also decided to resurrect our monthly cake sale, where we will be selling homemade eats to help raise extra funds,” said Louisa.

The project is a fundraiser for the MOTH Cottages and MOTH charities, and is a great service, selling reasonably priced flowers and providing flowers for all occasions, and for people to place on graves at the cemetery.

Cottage Flowers operates at the main entrance to Stellawood Cemetery on weekends and public holidays from 8am to 4pm.

The cake sale will be held on the first Sunday of the month.
