Street Lit project starts up again under level 3

Look out for the Mzansi Booksellers at venues across the Berea.

THE Mzansi Project booksellers are back at venues in Berea selling books to the public.

This comes after organisers of the Booksellers of Mzansi Project, now called Street Lit, realised two weeks after lockdown that it would have a devastating effect on the 14 homeless and vulnerable booksellers who sell books to make a living through the project.

Anivesh Singh, one of the initiators of the project, said they decided to offer some of the booksellers’ books on www.madeinchatsworth.co.za to enable them to earn some income during this challenging time.

“Thanks to the generous support of the public we managed to raise just over R16 000 for the booksellers. This money has now been distributed to them. We say thank you; people’s purchases and donations have provided hope, inspiration and nourishment to 14 very special people,” he said.

As the country moved forward and into stage three of lockdown, the booksellers are able to go back to selling.

Look out for them and buy books every day at KZNSA Gallery, Berea Centre and at the corner of Cathedral Road. They will also be at Westville Mall from 14 to 30 June (except 16 and 27 June).

Organisers are struggling to find other venues as church services and arts events are not happening on any scale.

They have appealed to those running a workplace to invite them to send in a bookseller who can offer some quality books at good prices to staff. Contact Illa Thompson on pubmatgal@gmail.com if interested.
