Suspect nabbed after armed robbery at Berea’s Tollgate Bridge

The couple were robbed after their vehicle broke down on Tollgate Bridge.

A ROBBERY suspect was nabbed by police while he attempted to flee after robbing a couple on Tollgate Bridge on 10 June.

According to Col Thembeka Mbele from provincial SAPS, it is alleged on 10 June at 2pm, a couple was driving in their car on the Tollgate Bridge, N3 west bound, when the vehicle broke down.

“While they were busy with their vehicle, they were approached by an unknown man who pointed a firearm at them and robbed them of a cellphone. Police officers from the Durban Flying Squad and Umbilo Task Team immediately responded to the scene. The suspect was placed under arrest while attempting to flee. He was found in possession of the complainant’s cellphone and a gas gun,” she said.

Mbele said investigations revealed that the suspect was linked to another case of business robbery reported earlier.

“It is alleged the suspect entered a tuck-shop situated at King Dinizulu Road and held up a man, threatening to shoot him.  He took cash from the till and fled the scene.”

The suspect made his first court appearance on 11 June at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on charges of armed robbery and business robbery.
