Knit beanies and mittens for seafarers

Every item you knit will make life a little easier for someone working on a ship.

THE wool shops are open, and winter is a time for knitting.

The Sailors” Society SA needs beanies and fingerless mittens for its Christmas parcels and is encouraging the public to help. Sailors wear the beanies under their hard hats and the mittens under their working gloves. Every item you knit will make life a little easier for someone working on a ship.

“Like other organisations, fundraising events of the Sailors? Society SA were put on hold, on account of the lockdown, but the Society and other Missions are planning for the Share your Christmas with a Seafarer (SYCS) project, and items such as mittens, beanies, scarves, mugs and other items are collected, packed into parcels and handed out to the seafarers on board vessels in port as well as those at outer anchorage over Christmas,” said Yvonne de Kock from the Sailors” Society SA.

Undaunted by the lockdown, the Society still has a band of energetic women at Flame Lily Park and Cowies Hill Lions Club and others who have kept themselves busy and continued their knitting for seafarers.
