Four men brutally attack truck driver in Umbilo

The truck driver continued driving despite being repeatedly stabbed by the men who climbed into the horse and trailer.

A TRUCK  driver is in a serious condition in hospital after he was brutally assaulted whilst driving through Umbilo on Tuesday night.

According to Blue Security’s Andreas Mathios, the driver was driving along Sydney Road at around 7.30pm on Tuesday night.

“The trucker stopped at a set of traffic lights and while waiting for them to change four suspects surrounded the vehicle,” Mathios said, adding that the men surprised the driver by climbing inside the horse and trailer.

“They produced knives and demanded cellphones, cash and other valuables from the driver,” he said.

“In response, the driver reacted by accelerating down Sydney Road for about a kilometre, all the while under attack inside the cab.

He kept driving and mounted the pavement while being stabbed repeatedly,” Mathios said.

The driver managed to keep the truck moving in a straight line, narrowly missing other parked trucks on the road who were unloading cargo outside various business premises.

However, the truck took out lamp posts and signposts as well as a business’s wall and gate, causing extensive damage.

“The suspects continued to stab and assault the driver before finally making their escape. leaving him in a serious condition. He sustained stab wounds to the abdomen and was taken to King Edward Hospital,” said Mathios.

“It is unclear whether the suspects were successful in getting away with anything in the attempted robbery and attack.”

Umbilo SAPS, Tracker, Blue Security Tactical Team and armed response officers responded to the scene and a search immediately began in the surrounding area.

A case of robbery has been opened.
