Saint Giles appeals for birthday celebration support

Saint Giles has decided on a unique way to celebrate its birthday by inviting the public to share its celebration as well.

ßTHIS month marks the 68th birthday celebration of Saint Giles, a non-profit organisation for the disabled.

As one of South Africa’s leading non-profits in nurturing people living with disabilities, Saint Giles remains committed to enhancing the quality of life for disabled persons in need, be it temporary or permanent.

Saint Giles was established at a time when parents of children and persons with disabilities had nowhere to turn.

Since then, it has opened its doors to the most vulnerable that were affected by disability conditions, from near-fatal injuries, severe spinal injuries to persons that have experienced a stroke, to those who are born with physical disabilities.

The organisation has always relied on the support of friends and partners in making a difference.

Through donor-funds they were able to develop various programmes, specifically designed to help rehabilitate individuals that attend their Remedial Therapy Centre , as well as to provide training to committed therapists so that its beneficiaries receive the best care and therapy.

During lockdown, Saint Giles has decided on a unique way to celebrate its birthday by inviting the public to share its celebration as well.

“One way of observing a birthday or an anniversary, during the lockdown period, is to contribute by donating to a charity”, said Marketing and Donor Liaison, Brenda Craig.

The organisation’s Managing Director, Terry Rennie said, “Our success over the past 68 years has been the result of support and contributions by donors, partners, individuals, the community and our dedicated staff. Sixty-eight years is a major milestone for an organisation.

“Since the outbreak and the announcement of the lockdown, we were forced to close our charity shop, Remedial Therapy Centre and offices. Our Work Centre closed for the initial 3 week lockdown period, but re-opened for business on Monday 20 April as an Essential Service Provider. We are now compelled to comply with safety protocols in the workplace, to ensure safety, personal protective equipment (PPE) for our staff in the Work Centre, and then in the other areas as lockdown levels are reduced.

“The unexpected high costs of the personal protective equipment have impacted considerably on the organisation. Our main concern is to maintain the safety protocols.

“As a non-profit organisation, we rely on the support of funders, donors, and partners. I appeal to the generosity of the public and corporates, to assist us through the support of donations. I encourage you to nominate Saint Giles as your charity of choice or when you or a loved one is celebrating a birthday or an anniversary and donate to a noble cause.  All proceeds will go towards helping Saint Giles continue to provide service and support to the disabled, especially after this lockdown period has ended.”
