Glenwood trio to join mighty Lions rugby team

The boys are all hoping to make the Junior Boks squad (Under-20) for next year.

A TRIO of Glenwood boys has been signed to the Lions rugby team for next year.

Jordan Hendrikse, 19, Henk Gouws, 18 and Nico Steyn, 18, will all be donning the red and white kit of the Johannesburg-based outfit.

“It has been really overwhelming,” said Hendrikse, who matriculated from Glenwood last year.

Hendrikse, originally from King Williamstown was scouted by Glenwood during a primary school tournament where he showed his burgeoning potential as a flyhalf.

Hendrikse is currently in his first year studying Psychology at Stellenbosch University while keeping fit and playing rugby.

“I was enjoying university life but playing rugby is what I have wanted to do all my life. So at the moment I’m still figuring things out in terms of studies and clearances,” he said.

Hendrikse said he was looking forward to seeing his former high school teammates next year at the Ellis Park stadium.

Standing at 194cm and weighing 113kg, Gouws will be hoping to cement his place as a flanker for the Lions. Born and bred in Glenwood, Gouws started playing rugby from the age of 7 and has made it into the first teams of many divisions and academies.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, this season’s school rugby league has effectively been written off but for Gouws, his professional career is only just starting.

“I am very blessed, I have been wanting my whole life to play for a club like the Lions. I called my grandfather and parents and they were all very proud of me,” he said.

Steyn, is the current head prefect at Glenwood and the newest scrumhalf for the Lions. Steyn will be returning to his home province of Gauteng, having grown up in Pretoria before getting an opportunity to advance his rugby skills at Glenwood.

“It’s a massive opportunity to try and get my game to a higher level, which I will try my best to do,” said Steyn.

Asked about their future goals, the boys all kept their feet firmly on the ground saying they want to make the Junior Boks squad (Under-20) for next year.
