No place to hide as Durban police pounce on wanted suspects

The suspects were found hiding in KwaMashu by the eThekwini Central Field Unit.

POLICE officers from the eThekwini Central Field Unit arrested two robbery suspects aged 26 and 29 who were hiding out in KwaMashu on Friday night.

According to Brigadier Jay Naicker, police pounced on the first suspect at a shopping centre.

The man fled into dense bushes when he spotted the police but was eventually apprehended after police made an extensive search of the area.

The suspect is believed to have entered a shop on Mahatma Gandhi Road with his accomplices last month and stole groceries, cellphones and airtime vouchers.

He was arrested and detained at the Point police station on charges of robbery.

He and his four co-accused who are already in custody, appeared in Durban Magistrate’s Court this week.

In continued police operations in the area, a second suspect wanted for robbery was found hiding in a stormwater drain.

“It is alleged the suspect attacked and robbed a 63-year-old man who was withdrawing cash from a bank on Mahatma Gandhi Road on 6 March,” said Naicker, adding that police investigations had led them to KwaMashu where the man was arrested.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula praised the police officers for successfully apprehending the suspects.

“We will continue to hunt down wanted suspects relentlessly and those that commit crimes in this province should always be looking over their shoulders as we will pounce on them at any given time no matter where they choose to hide,” he said.
