Following the diagnosis, management put some staff and residents who came into contact with the women into quarantine.

Commenting on the news, Tafta CEO, Femada Shamam said: “We were sad to hear about these cases. As an elder care organisation caring for 1 900 elders in 13 homes in Durban, we can only imagine the impact this diagnosis has had on the elders and care team at the affected home. We keep them all in our thoughts and prayers through this extrememly difficult time. We again reiterate the government’s appeal to the public to please lockdown. Stay indoors and follow the hygiene care recommendations, and stay safe.”

Ward councillor Ernest Smith said he had been in contact with the retirement homes in Morningside.

“All are watching the retirees for any signs of the virus. So far only Bill Buchanan has been affected. Bill Buchanan management has taken the necessary measures to assist in combating any further cases that may arise,” he said.
