Rossburgh footbridge crime hot spot, warn police

An elderly man was stabbed and killed while crossing the Rossburgh footbridge on Thursday.

UMBILO SAPS has urged people to avoid walking on the Rossburgh footbridge, especially alone, after an elderly man was murdered on the bridge last week.

Capt Pumzile Makaula from Umbilo SAPS said on 13 February at around 10.30am, the 68-year-old man was crossing over the foot bridge when he was allegedly attacked by an unknown number of suspects with the intent to rob him.

“They stabbed him once in the right hand side of his neck. The victim fell down and died at the scene. A passerby reported the incident to Umbilo SAPS,” she said.

Makaula said on 14 February, Umbilo SAPS conducted a foot patrol on the bridge. Two suspects were arrested after they were found in possession of knives and drugs.
“They were also linked to the murder of the man the previous day. Police are investigating the case of murder,” she said.
