Glenwood’s back alleys provide creative canvas for art project

The project is to create murals in back alleys and integrate this with learning for students from Durban University of Technology.

UMCEBO Design is on a mission to brighten up the back alleys in Glenwood.

Robin Opperman said he and Ujala Sewpersad from Umcebo Design were working on the idea this year of making something out of nothing, with the environment, as always, foremost in mind.

“In light of this, we have come up with a project, which started off as us just having some fun and being creative. I decided to paint the wall in the back alley by my home to brighten it up, and this project grew out of this,” he said.

Robin said the project aims to create murals in back alleys and integrate this with learning for students from Durban University of Technology (DUT), an institution Umcebo works well with.

“We aim to recruit DUT students, show them what we have done in the alleys and encourage them to put a brief together, approach home owners, propose a mural and then work on this. We are teaching them valuable interpersonal skills of finding a client and getting them interested in an idea, and then encouraging them to use their practical skills on the mural,” said Robin.

He said Umcebo Design aimed long-term to do a lot of murals in back roads and alleys in the area, to beautify them.

He said this was also an opportunity for people to turn conventional artist skills into a mural and for homeowners to paint their own murals and reclaim the alleys in the areas.

“Most people are very supportive of what we are doing. I think the best ideas suggest themselves and this just came about, and I feel can grow into something good,” said Robin.

If residents have any unused, but not expired, acrylic or PVA paint of any colour, as well as spray paint and old paint brushes of any size which can be donated to the project, contact Robin on 083 793 3408.
