Newborn strangled, dumped in bin

A case of murder was opened at Cato Manor SAPS and a 24-year-old woman was placed under arrest.

KWAZULU-NATAL Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Khombinkosi Jula has commended police for arresting a woman for the murder of her newborn baby.

According to provincial spokesman for SAPS, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, Cato Manor police received information on 15 February regarding the concealment of birth at a flat in Candella Road.

“Upon arrival at the scene, the body of a newborn baby boy was found wrapped in a blue shirt inside a municipal bin. The body was discovered by a member of the community.”

Mbele said police conducted an investigation which led them to a specific flat in Candela Road where police officers made the gruesome discovery of an umbilical cord inside a bucket. “Further investigation revealed that the baby was strangled and dumped inside the bin. A case of murder was opened at Cato Manor SAPS. A 24-year-old woman was placed under arrest and is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrates Court,” said Mbele.
