Life sentence for murderer of DUT student

Mbutho, who lived in Clermont, was on parole for house robberies he committed in 2014 when he attacked and robbed Ndlovu.

MSIZI Mbutho, a 29-year-old former Durban University of Technology student, was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Pietermaritzburg High Court this week for the brutal murder of 18-year-old first year student, Sandile Ndlovu in September this year.

Ndlovu, was attacked with a hammer and stabbed as he was studying inside a lecture hall on the Steve Biko campus.

He was robbed of his cellphone and laptop. Ndlovu was rushed to hospital where he was declared brain dead and later died of his injuries.

According to reports, Mbutho, who lived in Clermont, was on parole for house robberies he committed in 2014 when he attacked and robbed Ndlovu.

Senior Director of Corporate Affairs at the DUT, Alan Khan, said they were relieved that justice was served and that Mbutho was found guilty.

“Whilst we know that this cannot bring back Sandile, we hope that his family, friends and classmates will be comforted in the knowledge that the suspect was apprehended, successfully convicted and appropriately sentenced for the vicious attack.”
