Denis Hurley Centre remembers

Further acts of remembering and memorialising were held by Denis Hurley Centre in November.

DENIS Hurley Centre (DHC) hosted events to further remember and memorialise the founder of the centre following the opening of a pedestrianised street named in his memory recently.

After the opening of Paddy Kearney Way, the evening Mass at Emmanuel Cathedral was dedicated to the memory of Paddy. Rt Rev Rubin Phillip, Bishop Emeritus of Natal, and a Trustee and Patron of the DHC, gave a reflection on how Paddy’s life can continue to be an inspiration to all today. The choir of Umbilo Catholic Church, dear to Paddy’s heart, led the music including one of his favourites Be Not Afraid.

Another special Mass in November was led in the DHC Prayer Room by Fr Denardo. It was offered for all the deceased of the Denis Hurley Centre – benefactors, volunteers, beneficiaries and partners. This is an annual tradition which also includes a blessing for those names inscribed in the centre’s book of thanks.

The late Archbishop’s name was remembered in a particular way with the 24th Annual Denis Hurley Lecture organised by the Justice and Peace Department of the Archdiocese. This year’s speaker was Dr Siphiwe Mkhize who spoke about the tradition of Catholic Social Teaching, often called ‘the Church’s best kept secret’. The crowd of 65 people from Durban and Mariannhill dioceses found it very enlightening.

The day after the unveiling of Paddy Kearney Way, artists from the D’Urban Sketchers group chose to meet in the city’s newest landmark and capture some of the richness and complexity of the area. They also encouraged some homeless people waiting for lunch to try for themselves.

The DHC has recently announced a new art-based fundraiser for early 2020 called ‘Art and Soul’. Artists of all backgrounds will be encouraged to create works on the theme of sharing the city, which will then be exhibited for sale in different locations around Durban.
