Refuse bag delivery blues deserve refund, says DA

The DA said blue refuse bags haven’t been delivered to residents for about three months although they are still being charged for them.

THE failure by Durban Solid Waste (DSW) to deliver the city’s blue refuse bags to residents who pay to have them delivered, has prompted the Democratic Alliance (DA) to write to the City Manager demanding an intervention into the ongoing issue.

According to DA caucus leader, Nicole Graham, the issue is causing mouting frustrations.

Graham said the bags are delivered to residents who elect to receive them for an additional fee of R66.70, excluding VAT, which is added to their municipal bill. However, the bags haven’t been delivered to residents for about three months, despite them being charged for the bags.

“The matter has been raised with DSW on numerous occasions, but it is still not resolved. If DSW is unable to supply the bags, which are not an ordinary service, but an additional cost, then the cost of the bags must be taken off the residents’ bill. It is ridiculous to continue to charge residents for a service that the City knows it is not delivering,” said Graham.

She said the DA had written to City Manager, Sipho Nzuza to demand his intervention into the matter, and to request refunds on all bills for those resdients who haven’t received the bags that they’ve been charged for.
