School art expo

Many of the pieces were the culmination of hours of reflection on learners' personal experiences, and how best to present them.

ST Henry’s Marist College recently opened its 2019 High School Art Exhibition, where guests were treated to a professional display of outstanding artworks ranging from pen sketches and charcoal drawings, to portraits, paintings and sculptures.

This year’s IEB Matric art theme, ‘Liminality,’ relates to “a transitional or initial stage of a process,” a subject particularly relevant to learners as they embark on a new chapter in their lives. It was evident that many of the pieces were the culmination of hours of reflection on their personal experiences, and how best to present them.

Also on display at the exhibition were the Engineering, Graphics and Design Practical Assessment Tasks and the work of the school’s photography club.

Guest speaker, Durban-based contemporary visual artist, Grace Kotze, gave the audience some insight into how she produces works of integrity, by painting places and people in her every-day life, from an emotional point of reference.

Daniella Hartman, Head of Department of Visual Art, said: “We are extremely proud of the level of effort and authentic expression that our learners have brought to this exhibition.”
