Durban promenade extention opens in time for festive season

Residents will be able to cycle or jog for 8km, from the harbour mouth straight to Blue Lagoon with ease.

DURBAN’S beachfront promenade extension will be open in time for the holiday season. The city has confirmed that the extension which stretches fro uShaka Marine World to the Durban Harbour, will open to the public over the festive season.

The project is a catalyst to the R35 billion Point Waterfront development which will be undertaken in three phases over the next five to 10 years.

In July, Deputy City Manager of Economic Development and Planning, Phillip Sithole, reported that the 750 metre promenade extension was 80 per cent complete. Sithole said after the completion of the promenade extension, the private sector investment in the Point Waterfront Development would be launched which included a retail mall and residential apartments for the area. This will see a developer investment of R2.8 billion and an annual rates contribution of R200 million.

Commenting on the progress of the development to date, eThekwini Municipality spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela, said: “The City is grateful that the promenade will, this festive season, definitely be open to the public. The contractor is currently hard at work with final touches that will see the multi-million project being officially launched, hopefully before the end of this month.”

He said this was good news for residents as they will be able to cycle or jog for 8km, from the harbour mouth straight to Blue Lagoon with ease.

“We can safely say the project is now 99 per cent complete. Once completed we are expecting it to unlock multi-billion rand developments in the form of two sky-scrapers, one for residential apartments, while the other one will be a hotel. Adjacent to these will be a shopping complex that will also create much needed job opportunities.”

The promenade project forms part of the City’s plans to regenerate the inner city. Four priority zones had been identified, including the area from the City Hall to the Beach and Point, which includes the promenade extension, work on water mains, and investment in the Centrum site and Rivertown.

A second area extending from City Hall to Warwick, will see the municipality invest in the Markets of Warwick project pipeline, public realm, informal trade and retail, and public transport. Third on the priority list is the area from City Hall to the Port, which will be followed by the area from City Hall to uMgeni River, which will see R30 million invested in Blue Lagoon, R10 million annually for beach infrastructure and R25 million for maintenance.
