Acclaimed poet releases new volume of poetry

My Father’s Blazer delves into diverse subjects, from environmental concerns to nostalgic reflections.

WELL-KNOWN Durban poet, Phelelani Makanya, recently published his latest collection of poems titled My Father’s Blazer.

Makhanya, a familiar and beloved voice in the literary world, has published many of his works in major South African literary journals such as New Contrast, Botsotso and others. His poems have also been published in The Kalahari Review and Praxis Magazine Online. He has performed his poetry around the country which include Poetry Africa 2011 and Poetry Africa 2018. His debut poetry collection titled This Time I Shall Not Cry was published in 2018.

My Father’s Blazer, Makhanya’s second volume of poetry, delves into diverse subjects, from environmental concerns to nostalgic reflections, to the vivid imagery of our natural landscape. But it is his glaring naked bravery that is brought to the surface as he confronts his childhood lingering shadows, growing in a broken family with tangled family complexities.

My Father’s Blazer will soon be published in Spanish. Makhanya will also be taking part in the Mendellín International Poetry Competition, based in Spain. The book will be available in all leading bookstores as well as internationally.
