Durban transport fares increase

The Durban Transport contract makes provision for an annual fare increase to enable the service level to be maintained.

DURBAN’S bus commuters will have to dig a little deeper in their pockets for bus fare. eThekwini Council’s Executive Committee approved an 8.85 per cent Durban Transport fare increase at a meeting held on Friday, 13 September.

A report presented to the committee noted that Durban Transport provided access to around 50 000 passengers daily and was funded through passenger fare income, a subsidy from the national budget received via Province as well as a contribution from Council. It further stated that given the fact that operational costs escalated every year, the Durban Transport contract made provision for an annual fare increase to allow the service level to be maintained.
