Robber killed during shootout

A robbery suspect was fatally wounded during a shootout with police in the Durban CBD.

A MAN was killed and two others arrested following a shootout with police in the Durban CBD on Monday, 9 September.

Lt Col Thulani Zwane from provincial SAPS said police officers from Durban Central were conducting crime prevention operations in the central business district and while on patrol they spotted four men robbing a woman at an ATM machine. The suspects jumped into a getaway vehicle and sped off as soon as they saw police officers approaching.

“The two police officers pursued the suspects and a shootout ensued between the suspects and police. During the confrontation, police apprehend two of the men and a third was fatally wounded during the shootout,” he said.

Banks cards, a knife, an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, cash, cellphones as well as other items were seized from the men. They were charged with attempted murder, robbery as well as illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and will appear in the Durban Magistrates Court soon.

Provincial commissioner for KwaZulu-Natal, Lt Gen Khombinkosi Jula, applauded the arrests by the police. “Despite the resistance from these criminals, our police officers remained resilient and stood their ground. I am grateful that our police officers managed to escape unscathed during the confrontation,” said Jula.
