FAMILY Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units in KwaZulu-Natal secured nine life sentences and 367 years imprisonment for crimes committed against women and children.
Col Thembeka Mbele from provincial SAPS said the statistics reflected tireless work carried out by police units during the month of August. He said police would continue to intensify their investigations and contest any crime against women and children.

“A total of 327 suspects were arrested for sexual related cases and 42 convictions were secured during this period, while other cases remain under investigation and some are still pending at various courts. One of the accused was sentenced to a total of three terms of life imprisonment for rape cases,” she said.
The accused were convicted for various crimes such as rape, murder, kidnapping, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, attempted rape, robbery and child abandonment.
