Lengthy sentence for armed robber welcomed

A thief was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for robbery and possession of a dangerous weapon.

THE Durban Regional Court, last week, convicted and sentenced Lungile Sabelo Msimango, (28), to 25 years imprisonment for robbery and possession of a dangerous weapon.

On 26 December 2018, the victim, Lindelani Gumede was walking along Berea Road at around 2.30pm, when he was attacked by the accused and another person who came up from behind him.

“One choked him and the other put a knife to his neck and threatened him not to say a word while they searched him, removing a cellphone and a wallet containing cash. After robbing the victim, the two walked away on foot,” said Capt Muzi Maphumulo, eThekwini Central spokesperson.

He said the victim followed the two alleged robbers, and from a distance saw a police van stopping next to them, and one of the robbers fleeing. The police were searching the accused when Gumede ran to the police and informed them that he had been robbed by the same man. The victim’s cellphone and wallet containing cash were seized from the suspect and he was charged with robbery.

Maphumulo said: “The investigating officer, Warrant Officer Khoza, did an excellent job, and the judgement by the court will surely deter the criminals who commit such violent crimes.”
