ANC confirms Gumede’s resignation

The African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal has confirmed the resignation of former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede

THE African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal has confirmed the resignations of former eThekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede and her fellow Exco colleagues who were recalled by the party last week.

News of the resignations comes after much speculation surrounding Gumede and the ANC Exco members’ alleged refusal to resign. The DA has welcomed news of the resignations saying Gumede’s term had been nothing but bad news for Durban residents and a relief now that it was finally over.

“The Municipality must now move to recover losses from Gumede and those who worked with her to loot eThekwini” said DA’s Nicole Graham.

Speaking to The Berea Mail, ANC’s spokesperson in the Province, Ricardo Mthembu, confirmed the resignations of all demoted deployees from public office in the province. Mthembu further said that Gumede and her axed colleagues would continue serving in the municipality as councillors.

Meanwhile the IFP has called on the mayor elect, Mxolisi Kaunda to make his first order of business to clean up corruption within the administrationa nd ensure service delivery is restored. Thami Ntuli, the IFP provincial chairperson in KZN said ridding the municipality of former Mayor Zandile Gumede was the first phase in restoring order in eThekwini. “The task at hand now for the new Mayor should be to focus solely on ridding the entire municipality of the rot and corrupt activities which have transpired for far too long. While we welcome the new metro Mayor, we remain extremely concerned that the entire administration within eThekwini which has remained unchanged, will not be able to effect the necessary changes required to speed up service delivery,” he said.

Gumede, who is facing fraud and corruption charges relating to R208 million Durban Solid Waste tender will make way for current MEC of Transport Mxolisi Kaunda, who was last week announced as mayoral elect.

Kaunda and former finance MEC, Belinda Scott, who will replace ousted Fawzia Peer as deputy mayor, will be sworn in at Thursday’s council meeting.
