Vendor overwhelmed by public support

Shirley Pretorius, who is suffering from kidney failure, has still not received any dialysis.

AFTER a long absence from her job selling blankets at the intersection of Claribel and Lilian Ngoyi Roads in Morningside, vendor Shirley Pretorius, returned to work this week.

Shirley, who is waiting to start kidney dialysis, said she is a long way from feeling 100 per cent, but at least she was up and about and able to contribute to her family’s income.

“I tire easily and have no strength, I can’t lift things like I used to, however I need to pace myself as carefully as I can. I didn’t receive treatment while I was in hospital for two weeks and felt happier to be at home but found it frustrating not being able to work,” she said.

Shirley saw the doctor for a check up on 30 July and was told she could go back to work but that she had to take it easy.

“So I am back on my spot, the spirit is willing and the rest is on catch up! By 1pm I am feeling finished and need to rest before getting up to prepare dinner. Thank the Lord, I have put on a little weight as I lost so much and my clothes are pinned up for now. But having a pity party is not part of my character. I am happy to be working and have to wait and see what happens next,” she said, adding that her next doctor’s appointment was booked for December, and there had been no further news on when she would be able to start dialysis.

“I look at this as being a good testimony to the Lord. I am still here, I am back up again and am rested, despite not having had treatment. I want to say a big thank you to everyone in the community for their support during my absence and everything that went with it. There was a lot of support and I was pretty taken aback by the help and the calls to find out how I was,” she said.
