Durban cops arrest errant drivers in weekend roadblocks

58 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in the city during the Vodacom Durban July and after the Party Durban Rock event.

POLICE showed no mercy over the weekend following the warning by MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, ahead of the Durban July weekend, to road users to respect traffic rules or face jail time.

Capt Muzi Maphumulo from Durban Central SAPS said 58 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in the city during the Vodacom Durban July and after the Party Durban Rock event.

“Multi-disciplinary roadblock operations were held throughout the weekend during the two events. A number of roadblocks were conducted at Durban Central and Berea policing precincts where the big events were held on Saturday,” he said.

Capt Poobalan Naidoo from Berea SAPS said 25 people were arrested for drinking and driving in a roadblock in Florida Road alone.

He said a further eight arrests were made at the event for theft of cellphones, assault and fraud.

Naidoo said: “Driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol is a serious offence and if you are arrested you will be dealt with accordingly. If you are indulging in alcohol rather get a family member to drop and fetch you or use a metered taxi. Do not risk your life or the lives of other road users.”

Maphumulo said both events proceeded without disruptions with high police visibility in and around the areas.
